Chemical sensors based on surface plasmon resonance in a plastic optical fiber for multianalyte detection in oil-filled power transformer

MON4-GRID 2015 - Management, monitoring and control of the transmission grid

This work concerns the development and the characterization of sensors for the on-line monitoring of one or more chemical indicators in the insulating oil of power transformers.

In oil-filled transformers, the on-line continuous detection of chemical parameters (Dissolved Gases and chemical agents) in the insulating oil could provide an early warning of incipient failures (partial discharges, over temperature, hot spot) or of occurring accelerated aging on dielectric parts of transformers.

These sensors could operate as preliminary diagnostic markers allowing to reduce periodical collections of oil samples from the transformer and more expensive and time-consuming standard analysis (by Gas chromatography for instance) as foreseen by current practices. In this work we present a multichannel chemical sensor based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) in a Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), for determination of two analytes in oil transformer, Dibenzyl Disulfide (DBDS) and furfural (2-FAL).
