This paper reports main results of characterizations of Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCO) and multilayer transparent thin film structures for development of protective face screen for live line electrical workers.

Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCO) and multilayer transparent thin film structures are currently adopted in a great number of applications and devices. Generally, the relevant characteristics of these materials are their optical transmittance and their electrical conductivity. However, for some specific applications, the properties related to the attenuation of the electric field are of fundamental importance as in the case of protective conductive clothing for live line electrical workers. In fact, the adequacy of the garment and of all its component parts must fulfil the requirement of the International Standard Specification, in particular concerning the electric field screening efficiency and electrical resistance. At this aim in this paper several thin transparent and conductive films have been prepared and characterized in term of optical transmittance, electrical conductivity and electric field screening efficiency. Preliminary data confirm that the electric field screening efficiency of multilayer ITO/metal/ITO film can achieve much better performances with respect to conventional metallic net masks.
