SPR sensors based on bilayer metals in a D-shaped plastic optical fiber

MON4-GRID 2016 - Management, monitoring and control of the transmission grid

The work concerns the characterization of the SPR sensors in a plastic optical fiber (POF) for the monitoring of chemical agents in the oil insulation of electrical components of the transmission and distribution network. In articular they analyze multilayer metal structures used to optimize the performance of these platforms.

Surface plasmon resonance bio-chemical sensors in optical fibers have been shown to be able to play an important role in numerous fields.Many efforts have been done in order to improve such a platform in terms of reliability, robustness and miniaturization. In the classic configuration, based on thin gold film, the resonance wavelength versus the refractive index shows a good linearity, when it is used for monitoring an aqueous environment whose refractive index range from 1.332 to 1.418. In this work, we report the design, implementation and characterization of SPR sensors in a D-shaped plastic optical fiber (POF), based on thin bilayers of different metals, i.e. combined titanium and gold films or palladium and gold films aimed at improving the sensitivity of the optical platform in higher refractive index range
