MAT4-GRID 2017 - Equipment and components for electricity grids

The present report describes the activity concerning the investigation and the study of the characteristics of three new types of SAT tape and of three small-scale prototype coils for single-phase SFCL realized with such tapes. The tapes and the coils have been characterized by numerous tests in both AC and DC. As part of the European project FASTGRID, a characterization of an HTS YBCO based tapemanufactured by Theva was carried out.

The positive results of the in field test of the SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter), realized with first-generation HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) tapes in BSCCO (Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) allowed the demonstration of the technical feasibility of the realization and operation of the SFCL prototype, as well as its capacity to limit the short-circuit current. During the present three years research period it was decided to face the challenge of designing, implementing and testing a 9 kV / 1000 A SFCL device. The rated power is about 5 times higher than the previous SFCL. To reach this aim, new generation HTS tapes has been used which, thanks to the best electrical performances, should allow a reduction of the overall system and operating costs.

As preparatory activities for the realization of the new SFCL in the final size, numerous experimental characterization tests have been carried out on new SAT 2G CC tapes based on YBCO (YBaCuO) or GdBCO (GdBa2Cu3O7-X),combined with the numerical modeling and simulation of their properties and of their behavior in innovative devices for the electric network both in alternating current (AC) and in direct current (DC).

The present report describes the activities concerning the investigation and the study of the characteristics of three new types of HTS. With these tapes, a similar number of small-scale prototypes of single-phase SFCLs have been built. The windings of these prototypes are made by wrapping the HTS tapes in 2 layers of coils - anti-inductive configuration - on cylindrical supports in G10. An interpolated helix-wrapped insulation was added to the tape consisting of a 50 micron Kapton tape. The HTS tape of the inner layer and that of the outer layer have the surfaces on the side of the superconductor facing each other. The small prototypes have been characterized by numerous tests both in AC and in DC.

Finally, as part of the European project FASTGRID, a characterization of the YBCO based HTS tape manufactured by Theva was carried out both in AC and in DC.
