EVOLRETE 2014 - Evolution and planning of the national electric system

The present chapter, part of the book “Monitoring, Control and Protection of Interconnected Power Systems” reporting on the main results of the European ICOEUR project, focuses on the description of key technical features of some mature and innovative transmission grid technologies, such as PSTs (Phase Shifting Transformers), FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System) devices and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) infrastructures.

The present chapter, part of the book “Monitoring, Control and Protection of Interconnected Power Systems” which reports the main outcomes and results of the European project ICOEUR, focuses on the main technical characteristics of some mature and innovative transmission grid technologies, such as Phase Shifting Transformers (PSTs), Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) devices.

These technologies, which can be classified as PFCs (Power Flow Controllers), may be of key support to the TSOs (Transmission System Operators): thanks to their features they are able to increase total transport capacity and improve system controllability and flexibility.
