Analysis of different systems producing heat, cold and electricity. Detailed analysis on the waste-to-energy systems, that can achieve energy efficiency, if used in combined heat and power configuration and if they can be connected to a district heating system, able to aggregate different users with different load profiles.

Different thermal energy systems could satisfy the needs of heat for residential sector, service sector and industry. Those systems could be characterized by the primary energy they can be powered with, such as electricity or heat coming from renewable sources or from fossil fuels, but also by the energy products they can make available to users: heat, cold (e.g. reversible heat pumps) and/or electricity (combined heat and power).

The “waste-to-energy” systems, that can produce heat and/or electricity, burning waste materials that cannot be recyclable, are considered power plants able to perform energy efficiency. Those power plants could be combined with a district heating system in order to distribute heat and satisfy an aggregation of different users with different load profiles. A district heating system can achieve energy efficiency, but has to be designed and operated in the best way in order to avoid critical situations such as heat losses.
