Microscopic characterization of microturbine materials tested in the burner rig.

The potential success of microturbine-CHP in the distributed energy production market is related to the application of ceramic materials in some critical plant’s components. Non-oxide materials as silicon nitride offer mechanical resistance for high temperature and high stress applications as rotor and casing of the microturbine.

Oxidation of several commercial and under development silicon nitrides and some other ceramic materials, has been evaluated by high flux exposure in burner rig in presence of steam and CMAS. Oxidation behaviour and recession measurements, have been evaluated by SEM analysis with EDS for burner rig tested materials.
