The Wind TCP 2015 Annual Report by the International Energy Agency has been published. This study provides an accurate, up-to-date global overview of the windpower sector including a close-up of the Italian situation.

Last year saw the installation of 63 GW of new windpower capacity thus bringing the global wind capacity to 433 GW. Italy had to settle for a “mere” 295 MW already commissioned, a step forward if compared to the all-time low of 105 MW reached in 2014, but still far from the booming figures recorded from 2008 and 2012, easily exceeding 1,000 MW/year.

On the whole, Italian windpower plants can currently count on a total 8,942 MW, with a further 50 MW from mini and micro installations- totalling about 2,000 units - which brings the total capacity close to 9 GW. In terms of generation, today windpower can cover 4.6% of the national energy demand (14.6 TWh/year).
