Research topics

For several years he was head of the Transmission Network Planning research Group at RSE.
Now he acts as project coordinator of important national and international research projects. His research activities span over the following topics:

  • Transmission grid development expansion and technical economical assessments
  • Electricity markets studies and analyses
  • Smart Grids



  • He acted as coordinator of the FP7 European research project REALISEGRID (, 20 partners, 2008-2011) and actively contributed to many other FP7 European projects on electric transmission planning and competitive electricity markets (SUSPLAN, TWENTIES). More recently, he led a work package in the eBADGE project (trilateral balancing/reserve market between Austria, Italy and Slovenia).
  • He was also deeply involved (as WP6 leader) in the key EU project eHIGHWAY2050 (, managed by RTE France in the framework of ENTSO-E, aimed at creating a Modular Plan for deploying electricity highways in Europe till 2050. In March 2012;
  • During 2005 he was consultant at the Italian Regulator about the development of a common energy market in South-East Europe and about congestion management in Central-South Europe;
  • He participated as invited speaker in the workshop “Building a European Energy Infrastructure Selecting and implementing projects of common interest” organized by the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy of the European Parliament;
  • He was task leader within the study SD-2012-01 (“Faisabilité de réalisation de capacités d’échanges d’électricité entre les pays du nord de l’Afrique et du Moyen Orient, et l’Europe” - Lot 2 : Couloir Centre (Algérie – Tunisie- Libye – Italie)” – 2013-2014) performed on behalf of MedGrid, concerning future energy import from North Africa to Europe through the Italian peninsula;
  • In 2013, he published as editor the book “Advanced technologies for future transmission grids” for Springer (ISBN 978-1-4471-4548-6)
  • Starting from 2016 he will coordinate the new project SmartNet (Horizon2020, call LCE6-2015), with 23 partners over 3 years. Such project will deal with modalities for the provision of ancillary services for the electric system from entities located in distribution.



  • Degree in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (M.Sc) – year 1991. Thesis work was awarded of prizes “Quazza” and “Rosemount” as best thesis work in the field of modelling, control and automation.
  • Achievement of fifth year exam of Piano (9/10) and fourth Year exam of Traditional Musical Composition (8/10) at the Conservatory G. Verdi of Milan
