In a context of deep changes, safeguard adequately the resilience of the electrical system with regards to exogenous and endogenous phenomena is a key objective in order to ensure the continuity and quality of the energy supply to the end-users.

The energy and climate policies, that the European Commission is promoting through the Integrated Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan and the Energy Package Union, are favouring the progressive growth of the load demand supplied by non-programmable renewable generation, at the expense of the production of thermal power units, able to provide regulation services on power grid. The resilience of the pan-European electric system with respect to internal and external phenomena is therefore greatly at risk being the provision of services increasingly difficult and economically burdensome, to the detriment of end users.

The critical issues related to the interdependencies between power grid areas of different countries, the greater variability of operating conditions, the uncertainties correlated to the forecast of energy production and loads and the intensification of meteorological and environmental phenomena due to climate changes that cause every year great economic losses, are among the major vulnerabilities. In response to these criticalities studies, methods and tools are proposed in order to provide a valuable support to system operators. In synergy with the European Project iTESLA a methodology for security assessment has been developed and implemented in a software platform based on High Performance Computing to evaluate online the dynamic security of large power grids, taking into account stochastic forecasting uncertainties.

An estimation method of the Rate Of Change Of Frequency has been proposed to evaluate the regulation capacity of the interconnected system and to synthesize algorithms able to detect contingencies. How thermal power plants can provide ancillary services by adopting new technological solutions increasing their operational flexibility without early damaging their materials is under study to help improve the system regulation capacity. With reference to weather phenomena, the study of strong winds has been added to the development of the monitoring, forecasting and alert system WILD-WOLF.

In response to critical issues related to environmental phenomena, on the one hand a simplified method to classify the seismic vulnerability of existing dams is under development to define a priority of their seismic assessment required by the new regulation, on the other hand the upgrading of FloodRisk to evaluate the consequences caused by floods in terms of economic damage and loss of life and of SPHERA v.8.0 (RSE S.p.A.) for simulating flooding and liquefaction phenomena with the SPH technique are in progress. Regarding endogenous phenomena in order to forecast dam ageing due to swelling by Alkali-Silica Reaction in concrete new experimental test methods are investigated.
