The document presents a summary of the results achieved in research, with strong experimental nature, aimed at studying, development and testing of new materials, which can significantly improve the performance of components and equipment of transmission grids.

This document provides a summary of the main results of the activities in the PAR 2015 of the Project "Components and devices for the electricity grid".

The document is divided into an introductory chapter which illustrates the main national and international research programs, and the objectives of the three-year project, which is followed by the description of the project structure, based on two research lines. A chapter is devoted to each line, with the key results, the objectives of the research and the development phases thereof, and a brief summary of the activity in the previous PAR. Then follows a description of the activities in the work of research groups and standardization at national and international level.

The dissemination of knowledge has been practiced continuously through the publication of articles and conference presentations, for details, see the concluding chapter.

The overall objective of the project is conducting research of highly experimental nature, aimed at research, development and testing of new materials or surface coatings that can significantly improve the performance of components and transmission network equipment.

In particular, the main activities are:

For line 1 – Innovative materials for electrical lines components

  • The experimental characterization of different surface treatment solutions (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of conductors of high voltage power lines in respect of the corona phenomenon.
  • The experimental characterization of different surface treatment solutions (hydrophobic, hydrophilic, anti-static, with photocatalytic effect) for conventional insulators, in the presence of salt fog and solid deposit.
  • The development of an indoor test chamber and of tests for the reproduction of the phenomenon of in cloud ricing.
  • The preparation of rotating test lines for growing wet snow sleeve and evaluation of growth and detachment phenomena on conductors with hydrophobic treatment, performed at the WILD station.
  • The performance of tests of deposition by means of sol-gel coatings on hydrophobic glass support (with different compositions and different deposition techniques) and physical-chemical characterization of the obtained films.
  • The study and implementation of transparent and conductive thin films (TCO) for a suitable abatement of the electric field.
For line 2 – Innovative materials for superconductive components and devices

  • The performance of characterization tests (creep and wind vibrations) both on HTLS and traditional conductors, with new test methods identified for HTLS conductors.
  • The final design, implementation and testing in the laboratory of the windings of the tape SAT 2G YBCO-based three-phase prototype SFCL (9 kV and 1000 A). Assembly of the device within the new cryostat and execution of short circuit tests.
  • The conduct of experimental and theoretical activities aimed at the analysis of the causes of failure and performance degradation on SAT 2G tapes made from YBCO.
  • Cryogenic bushings: experimental activities in cryogenic conditions for the evaluation of cryogenic bushings for SFCL.
  • Superconducting cables: study and development of numerical simulation methods to analyze the behavior of the cable thermofluidodynamic and cryogenic fluids (nitrogen, helium, neon, ....) in forced convection within its cryostat, both in the case of normal operation and in the cases of "quenching" of the cable and in those in which the cryostat of the superconducting cable is damaged, causing significant losses of thermal insulation or even cryogenic fluid losses.
