The document presents a summary of the results achieved in researches, of a highly experimental nature, aimed at the study, implementation and testing of new materials, capable of significantly improving the performance of components and equipment of the transmission network.

This document provides a summary of the main results of the activities in the annual period (PAR 2016) of the project "Equipment and components for electricity grids".

The report is preceded by an introductory chapter which illustrates the principle of national and international research programs, and the main objectives of the three-year project, followed by chapters with a description of the activities carried out on the two lines in which the project is structured. The overall objective of the project is the study, and the development and use of innovative management techniques, monitoring and diagnosis of transmission networks, in order to assess the operating performance, including also the relation to environmental conditions and to the decisive influence these have on the network. The chapter shows the key results, the objectives and reasons for the research and development phases thereof, and a brief summary of the activity carried out in the previous PAR. Then follows a brief description of the activities in the work of research groups and standardization at national and international level.

The main activities performed in the period of PAR 2016 are relevant to: 

• The development and characterization of hydrophobic and anti-ice coatings using sol-gel technology for applications on glass insulators and aluminum conductors.  
• The setting up and carrying out test protocols in the laboratory and in the field.
• The preparation and experimentation of conductor samples treated with hydrophobic and ice-phobic products, commercial and prepared for research tests.
• Laboratory and field testing of coatings deposited on aluminum and glass platelets, of commercial products and developed by the research.
• The characterization of functional components for the detection of ice-sleeve formations on air lines.
• The definition of test protocols and the characterization of HTLS conductors with innovative composite core cores (Kevlar cores and carbon fibers with trapezoidal elementary wires).
• The experimental characterization of new YBCO superconducting tapes, modeling and simulation of their properties and their behavior in Superconductive Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) devices.
• The technical-economical comparison between the use of SFCL and current limiting reactors with reference to possible limiting methods of short circuit currents.
• A preparatory activity for the extension of numerical simulation methods for the study of the operation of superconducting cables in innovative configurations (correlated with the EU project Best Paths)

The action of dissemination of knowledge has been practiced continuously through the publication of articles and conference presentations, whose details are reported in the concluding chapter.
