\nThe FLUIDOS project, funded by the European Union\u2019s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, is inserted in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) landscape.
\nThe FLUIDOS project aims to create a meta-operating system able to leverage the resource capacity at the edge, scattered across heterogeneous devices, to integrate with each other and coherently form a seamless computing continuum. FLUIDOS will build upon consolidated Operating Systems and orchestration solutions like Kubernetes, on top of which it will provide a new, enriched layer enacting resource sharing through advertisement\/agreement procedures and hierarchical aggregation of nodes. Orchestration will leverage advanced AI Algorithms to optimise costs and energy usage in the continuum, promoting efficient usage of edge resources. A Zero-Trust paradigm will allow FLUIDOS to securely control and access geographically diverse resources. At the same time, Trusted Platform Modules will provide strong isolation and guarantee a safe deployment of applications and services. FLUIDOS will pursue the above goals by creating an open, collaborative ecosystem, focused on developing a multi-stakeholder market of edge services and applications, promoting European digital autonomy. The involvement of stakeholders is planned from the outset of the project through pilots and demonstrators in the fields of energy, agriculture and logistics, which will challenge FLUIDOS capabilities to adapt to different environments and operating conditions while showcasing its ground-breaking innovation potential. The RSE Intelligent Power Grid Use Case is focused on the use of phasor measurement units to monitor the power grid and leverage FLUIDOS to orchestrate phasor data concentrators and grid state estimation applications across the edge devices and cloud environment of RSE private cloud infrastructure. The architecture ensures seamless phasor data concentration and grid state computation, even in scenarios with multiple ICT outages or grid reconfigurations. It facilitates service offloading for maintenance, and local processing to mitigate communication breakdowns, and reduces hardware duplication for redundancy. Experimental tests of the architecture are conducted on the low-voltage portion of the electric distribution grid at RSE’s Distributed Energy Resources Test Facility.
