It was implemented in a plastic optical fiber that serves as an optical platform for the sensing element, i.e., a layer of molecularly printed polymer, which is a robust, reproducible, and low-cost receptor for chemical marker in the insulating oil matrix. This optical sensor was evaluated on the detection of a chemical byproduct of transformer paper degradation, furfuraldehyde (2-FAL).<\/p>\n<p>The performance of the optical sensor was tested on samples of used insulating oil leaked from ex-serviced instrument transformers and compared with the results of standard methods applied to the same samples.
