This paper presents a hierarchical control for DC microgrids that optimizes multiple control objectives, such as (i) voltage regulation, (ii) loss minimization, (iii) energy sharing, (iv ) the management of storage systems and (v) economic savings. Hierarchical control consists of sequential actions in which the upper level generates the optimal plan for generators and storage systems, which is sent and used by a model predictive control (MPC) controller. This controller has three main functions, namely (i) voltage regulation, (ii) energy storage management and (iii) day-ahead schedule tracking. The MPC actions are carried out by generating references for low-level controllers and considering the limits and characteristics of the network components and generators.
