The increasing deployment of renewable energy sources and the need to manage energy flows to provide ancillary services to the main grid require an overhaul of the distribution network that can benefit from the adoption of DC distribution networks. However, there are many challenges in protecting such a grid, especially in the case of complex DC microgrids. Indeed, the traditional protection schemes used for the AC grid are not able to isolate faults and protect DC grid components. This paper addresses the analysis and design of the protection scheme for a low-voltage DC microgrid in the presence of several renewable source generators, energy storage systems, loads and interface converters with the AC grid.
