The energy transition necessary to decarbonize the electricity system is leading to increasingly significant challenges in ensuring their correct functioning. On the one hand, the variability of renewable generation requires network operators to procure ancillary services in greater volumes than in the past. On the other hand, the growing development of flexible demand and energy storage systems in distribution networks could potentially offer network services, if aggregated effectively and if there is adequate coordination between transmission system operators (TSOs), distribution system operators (DSOs) and aggregators. Therefore, it is important to analyze whether distributed energy resources (DERs) can replace traditional generation in the provision of ancillary services (AS), which is a situation that will affect the roles of operators and the coordination between TSOs and DSOs.
