Synthetic receptors such as molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are suitable. This is demonstrated here with a sensor platform based on a multimodal plastic optical fiber, which is very promising for on-site applications due to its small size and low cost. An MIP with high affinity for the target substance, 2-furaldehyde in water, was used as the receptor. A high-refractive-index medium, namely vegetable oil, was considered due to its high relevance for industrial diagnostics. The effects of the MIP layer thickness and washing duration on the quality of the analytical signal were studied.
