A significant share of additional renewable generation, particularly photovoltaics, is expected to be located at the distribution level. The same can also be expected for electric loads, which will increase due to the spread of electric vehicles and electric heat pumps. To integrate the new resources, distribution system operators will need to strengthen the grid or adopt advanced control solutions. Both of these strategies require major investments, which must be properly planned. In addition, to determine the best approach from economic, regulatory and technical perspectives, extensive simulations must be performed on a large number of real distribution networks. However, network data of real distribution networks are usually not public. This paper studies the future evolution of Italian distribution networks by means of synthetic networks.
