In 1988, ICOLD decided to establish a Computational Aspects of Dam Analysis and Design Committee with the aim of contributing to the dissemination of computer software in the field of dam engineering and to fill the existing gap between mathematical modeling specialists and dam designers, authorities, and managers. Indeed, numerical modeling is now a key tool for dam engineers to efficiently execute the design process, the construction phase, and the entire operational life of the dam up to the possible decommissioning phase. Committee activities contributed to make numerical models fully accepted in engineering practice.
