This review is aimed at analyzing major recent or ongoing research and innovation projects on Smart Grids and energy carrier integration being conducted in Europe and different parts of the world, with a focus on Power-to-Gas<\/em> and Power-to-Heat<\/em> technologies. Some lessons learned from the analysis are reported in order to highlight potential synergies and possible R&I needs of the different deployment pathways. The analysis helped to show the applied value of these technologies in achieving sustainable and efficient energy systems and indicating the barriers to greater market penetration.
