This tool is the result of the collaboration between RSE and the University of Bergamo, aimed at creating mathematical models and solution algorithms for simulating the interaction between electricity and gas systems.<br \/>\nIn particular, this tool is key for the evaluation of the ever-increasing interconnection between the electrical and the gas component in energy systems, resulting from the installation of Power-to-Gas (PtG) systems; thanks to their flexibility, they can help electrical systems in addressing the problems related to the growth of generation from non-programmable renewable sources. PtG units consume electricity to produce hydrogen based on the electrolysis process and, through the methanation process (which also consumes CO2) synthetic biomethane can be obtained to be injected into the gas system.<br \/>\nIn a coordinated manner, the tool described here simulates the operation of the electricity and gas systems to guarantee the satisfaction of electricity and gas demands at the minimum overall cost, considering an annual time horizon in hours and in compliance with multiple operational constraints. The distinctive feature of the simulator is the integrated modeling of the bidirectional conversion between electricity and gas. In particular, while the transformation of gas into electricity is modeled using gas-fired thermal generators, the opposite conversion (i.e., the transformation of electricity into gas) is also included in the analysis through the modeling of PtG plants.<br \/>\nThe simulator also provides a detailed representation of additional components of the electricity system, such as non-gas-fired thermal generators, transmission lines, hydroelectric reservoirs and batteries, and of the gas system, including gas production sources and gas storage.<br \/>\nThe new simulation tool was applied to simulate different configurations of the Italian energy system in 2030. The Green Deal energy scenario generated with the TIMES_RSE model during 2020 was analyzed. A strong development of photovoltaic and wind power emerges from the scenario, which shows the first applications of hydrogen in final sectors (industry and transport).
