This reduces costs, weight and size of the tracker compared to conventional CPV systems. Using the techniques and devices already developed by RSE for the precision control of SMAs, a new hybrid module functional unit has been created that integrates the planar tracking system. On the front part of the module, four lenses have been positioned which focus the direct solar radiation onto the CPV cells, and twelve PV cells for the conversion of the global solar radiation.<br \/>\nIndoor tests were carried out to optimize some parameters of the planar solar tracker control system, in order to maximize precision and limit consumption. Outdoor testing of this optimized tracking system proved that the spots concentrated by the lenses remain within the area of the CPV cells in the range of incidence angles foreseen by the optical system.<br \/>\nThe second approach consists in the creation of a <strong>compact prismatic optical system with multiple optical units per high concentration module<\/strong> (micro-concentrator). First of all, the shape was optimized and some glass prototype versions of the micro-concentrator were realized, then field tests were carried out to measure their performance.<br \/>\nThe geometry developed with the prismatic concentrator proved its effectiveness in obtaining high concentration factors combined with high light transmission efficiencies with an optic thickness of approximately 4 cm. The light transmission efficiency obtained is equal to 80% without the index matching layer, which is used to match the refractive index of the glass concentrator to that of the underlying photovoltaic cell, while the concentration achieved in that case was 350 suns.
