Sometimes, this increased load is offset by local generation, which is mostly uncontrollable renewable energy that is also continuously growing; however, this new distributed generation can in turn cause occasional overloads on the distribution network. These factors are increasingly leading to undesirable situations on the distribution network, such as congestion or significant fluctuations in the power factor.<\/p>\n<p>One potential solution to these problems is the establishment of a local services market, where the distribution system operator (DSO) can obtain the necessary resources to address these issues. Additionally, distributed resources could be employed to help meet the growing demand for dispatching services from the transmission system operator (TSO). Experimental tests were conducted at the RSE test facility to verify that the communication tools and resources currently available on the market can provide ancillary services to the DSO. The results showed that the communication tools on the market are more than adequate to enable a local services market.<\/p>\n<p>To assess the effectiveness of such local services, which would be combined with participation in the dispatching services market (MSD), a collaborative effort was initiated with Unareti. This collaboration allowed for the analysis of real case studies and the extension of these considerations to more general scenarios through a technical-economic analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The initial analysis indicated that when there is an increase in load, the feasibility of using a local services market is site-specific, depending on load profiles, the amount and type of generation, network upgrade costs, market costs, and the characteristics of the overload. Generally, it was observed that on lines with overloads of 10%, causing a service disruption lasting more than about 70 hours per year, upgrading the network is more cost-effective. Conversely, when the overload duration is less than about 50 hours per year, utilizing local services might be more advantageous.<\/p>\n<p>The second analysis focused on reactive power compensation: in this case, the cost of installing synchronous compensators was compared with the cost of sourcing the necessary resources from a local services market.
