This work aims to analyze the atmospheric concentration of NO 2 and fine dust during the spring lockdown in Italy, with a focus on the Lombardy region, the first region in Europe where confinement measures were imposed by the Italian government. A high-resolution ad hoc model

was implemented to study the effects of traffic reduction in the city of Milan, and the analysis is completed by a nationwide study with a focus on the variation in air pollutants and the health effects recorded in other Italian cities affected by air pollution problems, due to their location in the Po Valley (Turin and Bologna) or to their high population density, such as Rome and Naples. Three case studies are presented at different spatial scales: national, regional and local. The three works share the same methodology and are based on the same modeling suite, which includes the CAMx (Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions) and the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting Model) models. The emission inventories and models used vary depending on the spatial scale. The modeling chain allows to model the concentration of air pollutants during the spring lockdown from mid-February to the end of April and to compare it with a normal traffic and activity situation. The main interest of this work is to analyze the response of the atmospheric concentration of NO 2 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 to a situation of progressively reduced road traffic. Compared to scenario studies that refer to hypothetical contexts, for the first time it has been possible to simulate a real context of reduced mobility and simultaneously validate it with measured air quality data.

For example, in the city of Milan, the decrease in NO 2 concentration was found to reflect the progressive reduction in road traffic. At times of greatest traffic reduction (around 70%), the concentration level decreased by one-third, both according to models and observed data. The effects on the atmospheric concentration of PM are less significant but not negligible, given its complexity in terms of emission sources, atmospheric chemistry and dependence on meteorological conditions. Ultimately, this study provides an order of magnitude of how incisive mitigation policies should be to achieve environmental objectives and consequently protect human health. In continuity with previous years, the results of the application of the emissions-concentration model to the metropolitan case and of the continued work related to the processing of linear sources in CAMx are presented.

https://www.rse-web.it/en/rapporti/sistema-modellistico-multi-scala-per-lanalisi-della-mobilita-e-la-qualita-dellaria-durante-il-lockdown-primaverile-per-covid-19/attachment/20010474/
V.
