A two-stage stochastic model for analysing the impact of RES volatility on the Italian power system

Gli effetti dell’introduzione di una grande quantità di incertezza legata alla generazione di energia elettrica da fonte rinnovabile è stata studiata mediante studi di scenario incentrati su un orizzonte temporale di una settimana e focalizzati sull’anno 2020, i cui risultati sono presentati in questo lavoro.

Within the framework of the European 2020 energy targets, a large increase of the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is foreseen in the Italian power system. A large part of this generation will be produced by sources affected by high levels of volatility and unpredictability, which, as a consequence, will introduce large levels of uncertainty in the national Power System. The effects of the introduction of such a large uncertainty on the Italian Power System have been studied by means of scenario analyses with a one-week time horizon focused on year 2020, whose results are presented in this work. This study has been carried out by means of the stochastic medium term electricity market simulator s-MTSIM. In order to take into account RES generation uncertainty, actual historical data of RES generation, provided by the Italian Transmission System Operator TERNA, have been statistically studied and rescaled according to the foreseen installed power in year 2020.
