    An innovative LIBS system for on-line quantitative analysis of raw coal

    E’ stato sviluppato un sistema LIBS innovativo in grado di eseguire l’analisi quantitativa del carbone grezzo che viene trasportato su nastro. Il sistema è stato testato utilizzando sette campioni di carbone di nota composizione chimica.

    To check the possibility of performing the LIBS measurements directly on the conveyor belts that carry theraw coal in a coal fired power plant, we have developed an innovative mirror based LIBS system with a large depth of field and manufactured a translation/rotation unit that allows sequential positioning of the raw coal under the measuring head. All experiments were performed in air under atmospheric pressure. Seven different coal samples (of known chemical composition) have been used.

    LIBS analysis of each sample hasbeen performed by averaging over 4000 independent measurements carried out at a pulse repetition rate of20 Hz. Calibration curves of Carbon and Hydrogen (that allow to derive the coal calorific value) as well ascalibration curves of other elements responsible for the ash formation have been obtained.
