An Optical platform for furfural detection in insulated oil of trasformer

In questo lavoro si riportano i risultati preliminari di uno studio di fattibilità per valutare le potenzialità applicative una nuova metodologia di monitoraggio di furani nei trasformatori di potenza isolate in olio.

Today’s main challenges for Electrical Utilities are either the aging of existing network equipment and tight operating and maintenance costs. In addition a higher flexibility, reliability and security are required by the new Smart Grid network. The availability of rapid, reliable and low-cost diagnostic tools are thus very important for Utilities; these tools could provide an early warning for network component failures both to promptly manage these situations and in view of more targeted and efficient Asset management strategies [1].

In this paper are reported results of preliminary tests on a plastic optical fibre (POF) platform based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and on a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) layer, in contact with the SPR active surface, for in-oil and on-line detection of chemical indicators of the accelerated aging of dielectric parts (oil insulated paper system) of transformer (furan-2-carbaldehyde).
