APOLLON Multi-APprOach for high efficiency integrated and inteLLigent cONcentrating PV modules (Systems)

The main objective In APOLLON is to develop High concentration Point Focus (PF) and Dense Array (DA) systems based on monolithic and discrete Multi-junction (MJ) technology with a final target cost of 2 €/W. To reach this ambitious goal the different technology paths are followed with due focalization on the recognized critical issues on each component of the CPV system. MJ solar cells are developed by using new materials and deposition technologies. Different optics are under evaluation, in particular, Fresnel optics, Prismatic lens along with new non-imaging, low F/#, high concentration (> 500 X), cell protecting optics. New concepts are applied for DA systems, in particular the spectra splitting concept, adopting different concentration level on different solar cells ( <100 X for silicon cells and > 400 X for III-V based solar cells), in order to downgrade the thermal management, making possible the only use of a passive cooling.  Both the optimized and the new technologies are under test to get reliable long life time CPV systems. High Integration obtained with microelectronic and automotive light technologies for high throughput module assembly techniques, along with intelligent solutions for accurate, reliable, cost effective tracking and reduced mismatch losses are addressed. Prototype systems are developed for a full environmental and economical assessment. APOLLON consortium involves all the actors’ chain, from Universities, Research Organisations, SMEs, big Enterprises to End-Users. With this contribution, the APOLLON integrated research approach, the progress so far, the possible breakthroughs, the impact on industry and the future challenges on the CPV technology are presented.
