Approaches to reduce weather induced risks on the electrical grid

In Italia l’intensificazione degli eventi meteorologici (venti forti, temporali e tempeste di neve), insieme con i periodi estivi prolungati e asciutti, mette a dura prova la continuità del servizio della rete elettrica. La presentazione illustra le attività che vengono svolte in RSE, dirette ad aumentare la resilienza del sistema elettrico nei riguardi di questi fenomeni.

In Italy intensification of weather events (strong winds, thunderstorms and snowstorms) together with prolonged and dryer summer periods put a strain on the continuity of service of the electrical grid due to: ice and snow overloads, storms and lightning phenomena, pollution of the external insulation. The presentation describes the activities that are carried out in RSE, aimed at increasing the resilience of the electrical system in respect of these phenomena. In particular two strategies are envisaged to reduce these risks of outages: The adoption of long term solutions (for new structures) such as more resistant structures by the introduction of new and more severe standards. The adoption of short / medium term solutions for the existing structures with the introduction of alert systems (by monitoring and forecasting atmospheric variables more affecting the behavior of the network) for a prepared management and dispatching of the grid. These solutions allow to mitigate the effects produced by the environment and increase the reliability and availability of the grid.
