Battery Energy Storage System applications for the provision of dispatching services: cost-benefit analyses

In this presentation, simulation results are reported about the operation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), either in a stand-alone configuration or supporting renewable source-based or conventional power plants, for the provision of different possible ancillary services (balancing, primary frequency regulation, and even inertial support). Such simulations are the starting point for carrying out cost-benefit analyses to assess the profitability of the investments or, more often, their distance from profitability.

Reference, in particular, is made to realistic scenarios for the Italian context, considering, as input data for the simulations, a frequency series measured at RSE, market prices and volumes published by GSE, power generation series related to Italian power plants. In most of the considered case studies, which moreover refer to future regulatory frameworks, the high investment costs for the BESSs are not paid back by the obtained economic benefits in a reasonable time horizon. While waiting for a significant reduction of BESS costs, the primary frequency regulation service offered by BESSs coupled with coal plants or a wind plants turns out to be potentially profitable.
