Bench Test for WaveSAX Wave Energy Converter Electro-mehcanical Power Take Off Characterizzation

WaveSAX è un dispositivo a Colonna d’Acqua Oscillante per la generazione di elettricità dal moto ondoso. Per la caratterizzazione del sistema elettromeccanico, sono state eseguite due serie di prove: (1) Turbina a velocità fissa, carico costante e (2) Turbina a velocità fissa, carico sinusoidale.

WaveSAX is an innovative OWC (Oscillating Water Column) device for the generation of electricity from wave power, conceived to be installed in marine structures and developed by the Italian Research on Energy Systems. The WaveSAX is an oscillating water column (OWC) device that has been conceived to be installed in ports and harbours in the Mediterranean sea. Starting from 2014, the device passed through several testing campaign in tanks. Next objective is to test the device in real sea conditions, installing the WaveSAX at the of the Port of Civitavecchia (Italy).

When dealing with a WEC technology, it is common to encounter oscillating power fluxes passing through zero values, with the Power Take Off nominal design point being a time-varying condition. In this situation the sub-systems standard design procedures have to be upgraded and some of the commonly used concepts have to be carefully used.For a complete characterization of the WaveSAX electromechanical system two different set of tests have been performed:

(1) Turbine at fixed speed, constant load (Steady State) and
(2) Turbine at fixed speed, sinusoidal load (Time-Varying).

The concept of efficiency resulted to be an unacceptable choice, provoking the loss of information of the system behaviour in the area of low rotational speed. For these cases, a power-losses approach is preferable to be used.
