Development and application of hydraulic two-dimensional modelling for flood risk protection

The present work aims at estimating the flooded areas considering the influence of vegetation on the flow resistance. Although during the flood, resistance of plants is a function of the water depth, the most used simulation models of flooding, commercial or otherwise, generally consider a constant value of the flow resistance in the time. As part of the collaboration between the Department of Environmental Engineering and Physics (DIFA) of the University of Basilicata and the research company RSE (Research on the Energy System), however, we wanted to implement a code for the two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation to estimate the flow resistance, step by step, as a function of the water depth. Starting from the architecture of the hydrodynamic model proposed by Molinaro et al. (1994), a new model has been proposed with a tool that calculate the roughness value step by step. The study area is the Ionian coast of Basilicata Region. The research conducted so far has led to detailed characterization of the vegetation of the coastal plain through laser scanner data, the implementation of procedures for calculating the flow resistance for rigid vegetation and some preliminary applications considering flood events with return periods of 30, 200 and 500 years. From these applications a first comparison between the scenarios with roughness constant and variable in the time has resulted.
