Development and realization of a medium Temperature solar cooling plant

Le attività di ricerca svolte da RSE sul tema del solar cooling sono oggi orientate verso sistemi a media temperatura. Gli studi precedenti hanno messo in luce le elevate prestazioni di questa tipologia di sistemi: simulazioni svolte in ambiente TRNSYS hanno dimostrato come questi impianti possano garantire risparmi di energia confrontabili a quelli della tecnologia DEC (Dessicant Evaporative cooler abbinato a collettori sottovuoto), ma con un costo d’investimento decisamente inferiore.

Recent RSE research activities on Solar Cooling are focalized on medium temperature closed loop systems. Numerical simulations, performed with TRNSYS in the previous reference period, showed the high performance of this kind of solution which is near to DEC (Desiccant Evaporative System) but with much very lower investment cost. Considering the interesting results, RSE decided to build a prototype plant, based on a field of parabolic through collectors operating at 160°C – 180°C, in its facility area.

The pilot plant allows to verify the performance of each component and the overall plant and will allow to develop specific control strategies for solar cooling plants, able to reduce electrical consumptions and maximize primary energy savings.The installation was completed in the present reference period: first tests were performed in the winter configuration. The performance of solar field and absorption chiller were investigated and the electrical consumptions of auxiliaries were verified in all the operating conditions. Performance tests in summer configuration will be later investigated.
