Effects of cathodic platinum loadings and organic substrate concentrations on the performance of single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFCs)

This study focused on the effect of cathode Pt loadings on the electrochemical performance (linear sweep voltammetry (LSV)) of the cathode in single chamber MFCs (SCMFCs). Moreover, the effect of the organic substrate concentration (chemical oxygen demand, COD) on the anode was investigated. Membraneless air-cathode SCMFCs (Volume 0.13L) were used in this study. This study showed that a significant decrease in Pt-loading (from 0.5-1 to 0.25-0.005 mgPt/cm2) did not affect significantly cathodic performance. Pt-loaded cathode performed better than the Pt-free cathode in the early stage of MFC operation, when the Pt was not yet poisoned by organics and other compounds. The anode performance was closely related with organic substrate concentration (COD) that led to diffusion problems. The varition in substrate concentration more than the variation of Pt loading affect the current in the single chamber microbial fuel cells.
