Electrochemical Storage Systems for Renewable Energy Application

Il poster illustra i risultati dell’attività sperimentale, condotta in ambito RdS, volta alla caratterizzazione di vari sistemi diaccumulo di energia (batterie) di diverse tecnologie in condizioni che simulano le applicazioni perl’integrazione dei generatori a fonte rinnovabile.

The need for an environmentally sustainable development and economic independence from fossil fuels, has spurred strong interest in generating electrical energy from renewable sources. The highly unpredictable nature of renewable sources, however, makes solar and wind power difficult to manage, especially at high penetration levels. These generators also produce a significant amount of electricity during off-peak times of absorption curves of load, and may have a destabilizing effect on weak grids. An efficient use of renewable sources can take place through a combination of these generators with energy storage systems that can act on the production curves by improving the reliability, stability and efficiency of the electrical grid.Electrochemical energy storage (EES) can be a valuable approach for improving the economics and utilization of renewable energy. EES can be used either at the generation site or close to loads. If installed near a PV plant, an EES system can store/release energy via time shifting in accordance with the generation profile. When using ESS with PV generation the extra electric energy generated during daytime is stored for use at night when there is no power output. Time shifting helps improve the economy of renewable power and management of the balance between supply and demand. Charging storage at night can reduce purchase during peak-rate periods.The storage systems used in this application are subject to different usage profiles characterized by quick changes of discharge and charge power at different values and durations.The poster presents the application of an energy storage system in combination with a solar photovoltaic plant and a co-generator, powering a grid-connected load. From real daily power data has been obtained a power battery profile useful to verify the performance of electrochemical energy storage to work in this application.
