Energy performance and saving scenarios of Italian urban water systems

Si presenta lo stato dei consumi energetici e scenari di efficienza del servizio idrico interato nazionale. Si elaborano più fonti dati, si individuano alcune variabili significative delle diverse fasi del servizio. Si ottengono stime i consumi standard e i potenziali risparmi energetici.

It is estimated that more than 2% of electrical energy used in Italy is employed for the Integrated Water Supply system (IWSS). Its efficiency is one of the options available for an integrated planning of smart cities towards decarbonisation.IWSS are extremely complex and varied systems, this make difficult to estimate their global efficiency.In Italy, moreover, the situation is very heterogeneous: municipalities that serve high-quality water by innovative technologies coexist with other that lose a lot of water through leakages, provide low-quality water and have high specific energy consumption.In this article is presented an analysis of the state of energy consumption and efficiency scenarios in Italy.

The analyses is carried out thanks of data provided by the Italian Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) that has information about water collected, delivered and losses in the integrates supply system and about loads of the urban wastewater treatment plants. Other data are provided by the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA) that give information about the efficiency of the Italian water utilities and by open-data DB on the wastewater treatment plants’ characteristics.

The results show the existence of some variables able to explain significantly the differences on specific energy consumption in IWSS: they contribute to the definition of standard consumption and to identify, by difference with current consumption, potentials for energy savings.
