Improving fuel characteristics of tomato residues through torrefaction

Il poster sintetizza i risultati di una applicazione sperimentale del processo di torrefazione – una forma di pre-trattamento termico applicabile alla biomasse solide al fine di migliorarne le prestazioni (es. densità energetica, la sua idrofobicità e le sue proprietà meccaniche) quando utilizzate a scopo energetico come combustibile in impianti di combustione – ad una serie di biomasse residuali derivabili dal settore agro-industriale nazionale, tra cui le buccette di pomodoro.

Torrefaction is a thermal pre-treatment that could be applied to the biomass. The process consists in biomass heating between 200 and 300 C in absence of oxygen. The aim is to obtain higher quality solid fuel that can be better used for combustion or gasification. Comparing to the original biomasses, torrefied products increase the energy density, become hydrophobic and improve the mechanical characteristics through the reduction of tenacity. The main cause of this behavior is due to the loss of oxygen from the macromolecules (in particular OH functional group) entailing the reduction in values of the C/O ratio. Torrefaction was experimentally applied on several agro-industrial residues including tomato food industry residues (peels) . The original biomass was firstly submitted to thermogravimetric analysis (to evaluate the thermal behavior of the main organic component and the mass losses) and then tested in a reactor at different temperatures and process time. Results show an increase up to 23% of the lower calorific value, corresponding to 32 MJ/kg dry matter, and a reduction of mass up to 26%. Furthermore, a reduction of the oxygen content up to 12% and the increase of the carbon content up to 73% have been observed. In conclusion, the torrefaction of the tomato byproducts improves significantly their fuel characteristics allowing to recovery these problematic residues for energy use. The work is part of a larger research proiect, Studies of the local production of electricity from biomass and residues, financed by the Research Fund for the Italian Electrical System under the Contract Agreement between RSE and the Ministry of Economic Development General Directorate for Nuclear Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency stipulated on July 29, 2009 in compliance with the Decree of March 19, 2009.
