Influence of the support on permeation of palladium composite membranes in presence of sweep gas

Si descrive alcuni risultati dell’attività svolta nel progetto 8 (Impiego sostenibile dei combustibili fossili e cattura e sequestro della CO2) sulle membrane per la separazione dell’idrogeno dal gas di sintesi.

Palladium alloy membranes are extensively studied for hydrogen separation from gas mixtures in membrane reactors. Many laboratories are focused on development of Pd-composite membranes made of a thin dense layer deposited onto a macroporous support, in order to increase H2 fluxes while maintaining high selectivity. The driving force of H2 permeation through Pd composite membranes can be further increased by feeding a sweep gas (such as nitrogen or steam) in the permeate side, in order to reduce H2 partial pressure. Some literature works, however, suggest that this gain can be significantly reduced due to the diffusion resistance of the support which leads to an increase of the H2 partial pressure in the pores near the surface of the Pd layer. Such a phenomena, however, hasnt been yet systematically investigated. The scope of this work is to evaluate the influence of N2 sweep gas on H2 permeation in Pd composite membranes.
