Intercomparison between two air pollution simulations in northern Italy based on different emission inventories

A comparison of the results obtained from the two chemical-dispersion simulations is presented with the aim to evaluate the effect of the emission inventory improvement, moving from 1999 to 2005. First of all, the main discrepancies in the two input scenarios are outlined then, for both the simulations, the modelled values are compared with measured data of main pollutants and the performances discussed. The modelling system is applied over a local domain of 250x250km2 in the North-West of Italy, where the main urban industrial area are located in the Po Valley, surrounded by the Alps which often give rise to weak circulation and stagnant conditions. The model resolution is 5 km. The set of emission data is collected from different regional and national inventories for the two years, 1999 and 2005 respectively. All the meteorological fields needed to the Eulerian chemical transport model CAMx are provided directly by the RAMS meteorological model, but the diffusion coefficients that are calculated by an interface code.
