Investigating aerosol optical properties using WRF/Chem

Le proprietà ottiche degli aerosol giocano un ruolo fondamentale per la corretta ricostruzione dei processi radiativi al suolo. In questo lavoro l’Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), calcolato a partire dagli output di WRF-Chem, è stato analizzato e confrontato con i dati sperimentali al fine di valutare la capacità del modello di riprodurre le proprietà ottiche delle particelle.

The WRF-Chem model has been applied over Europe in the framework of the AQMEII project to investigate the relationship between the outcome of the traditional model performance evaluation and the reconstruction of the aerosol optical properties. Model results have been compared with a wide set of conventional experimental data provided in the framework of the exercise as well as Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) fields archived from AERONET network. Results show that PM10 and PM2.5 general pattern is well reproduced by the model.

However, it underestimates the maxima daily episodes during winter months. AOD analysis indicates that model difficultly reconstructs optical properties. In the study, the causes of these model biases are investigated as well as the different impact of anthropogenic and natural aerosol loads on optical properties is discussed.
