Investigation on self-assembled polymer nanostructures as antireflection coating for photovoltaic cells

Studio di film polimerici nanostrutturati come possibili candidati per rivestimenti antiriflesso a basso costo da utilizzare sulle celle fotovoltaiche. I risultati mostrano un miglioramento nella trasmissione della luce all’interno della cella fotovoltaica dell’ordine del 30% per il campione migliore.

Nano-structured polymer films were investigated as possible candidates for inexpensive antireflective-coatings to be used on photovoltaic cells. The nano-structure was created by using a simple self-assembly process consisting in single-step deposition of the polymer layer directly on the surface of the cell. The resulting organic thin films are patterned with a uniform and compact layer of pores which size is about 200nm.

The performance of the nano-structured coating was characterized by measuring the optical transmission at the air/substrate interface. The measurements were performed by comparing the optical transmission with and without the antireflective nano-coating. The transmission measurements were performed at different angles of incidence and over a range of wavelengths extending from 400nm to 900nm.

Samples prepared by varying the operational conditions and the polymer used, resulting in appreciable morphology variations, were compared. The results show an improvement in the transmission of light inside the photovoltaic cell of the order of 30% for the best sample.
