Italian Offshore Wind Potential Evaluation through GIS Tools and Data

The offshore wind resource in Italy is in general lower than in the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, so it is very important to perform an accurate wind assessment in order to better evaluate the profitability of offshore wind initiatives. RSE has developed the Wind Atlas of Italy with offshore maps within 40 km from shore, but a high uncertainty is still associated to them due to the lack of direct offshore measurements. For this reason, coastal and island stations have been installed by RSE and a buoy equipped for wind measurements is going to be installed in the Sicily Channel. Starting from the wind maps of the Atlas, a survey focused on the offshore wind potential has been carried out by constructing a specific GIS tool containing many information/layers (such as the resource, the bathymetry and the distance from shore) in order to make a deeper evaluation of marine areas suitable for installation of offshore wind farms. An evaluation of the regional and national offshore wind potentials has been carried out with the aid of this GIS tool. Evaluations of expected energy production and energy cost from hypotheses of wind farms in selected sites can be carried out, too. An overall wind potential of more than 10 GW has thus been estimated in Italian waters. Here, more than 20 wind farms are already under consideration, but most of the available wind resource is located in waters with depth greater than 50 m, where floating systems are expected to be installed when this technology reaches the maturity stage.
