A realistic future scenario of car fleet development considers the increasing of the “zero emission” electric vehicles fraction up to the 25% of the total amount of cars with conventional combustion engines for the year 2020. This study aims to evaluate the effective air quality improvement that could occur close to high traffic road especially considering secondary pollutants like NO2. Simulation of the pollution dispersion and chemical transformation of the traffic emission were performed. The model is a Lagrangian particle model modified in order to account for chemical reaction between nitrogen oxides and atmospheric ozone background (Alessandrini and Ferrero Physica A 2009 and Air Poll. Mod. and App. 2010). The model includes the segregation effect due to the turbulent mixing through a parameterization. Furthermore, background ozone is reproduced using the ozone “deficit” as a new substance carried by each particle. An area sources representing a large road was considered in a domain of 1×2 km2. Different simulations were performed in order to account for many possible meteorological condition, both in stable and unstable boundary layer and with different wind intensities and directions. Firstly we tested the model performances against a field experiment taken in the literature (Rodes and Holland 1981). The comparison with experimental data is made in term of average concentration profile as a function of the downwind distance from the road. Then we considered the typical emission of a present-day urban freeway and compared two different scenario, the present one and those obtained with the introduction of the electric vehicles so as to be able to evaluate the impact of this new technologies on the air quality.
