MOBI BUOY: Offshore Wind Measurements in the Sicily Channel

RSE has recently installed a buoy (elastic beacon) 5 km off the coast of Mazara del Vallo in order to monitor offshore wind resources and other meteo-marine quantities. The name of the buoy is MOBI (Marine Offshore Buoy for Investigation).

Significant offshore wind capacity has already been installed in the North of Europe and offshore wind plant deployment is going to be considered also in many other countries in the world, such as the U.S., China etc. Installation and operation costs are higher than on land, but offshore wind regimes are generally less turbulent and the specific power production can overcome 4000 MWh/MW. Moreover the visual impact is strongly reduced by going farther and farther from the coast. For these reasons also Italy and other Mediterranean countries are looking at the challenge of offshore wind energy production even if their resource is lower and the water is deeper than in the North Sea. Particularly accurate offshore wind assessment is required for the evaluation of the most suitable sites and for a preliminary economic evaluation of the projects under consideration. Many wind maps are available at present, but all of them are based on very few direct offshore measurements. Particularly in the Sicily Channel, where water depth and wind resource seem to be suitable for future development of offshore wind plants, no direct data are available. RSE is at present carrying out a campaign for offshore wind measurement. Some coastal and island sites are already under investigation by means of wind measurement stations, and other similar suitable sites are under consideration and could enrich the database of measurements. Moreover, RSE has recently installed a buoy (elastic beacon) 5 km off the coast of Mazara del Vallo in order to monitor offshore wind resources and other meteo-marine quantities. The name of the buoy is MOBI (Marine Offshore Buoy for Investigation). The buoy will also be equipped with an inertial platform suitable for measuring its angular movements in order to correct the measured wind direction and eventually the wind speed intensity.
