Modeling of thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena in superconducting cable cryostats with double duct in which different cryogenic fluids flow

In questo articolo sono mostrati i risultati principali delle attività modellistiche riguardanti i fenomeni termo-fluido dinamici nei criostati dei cavi superconduttori a doppio involucro in cui scorrono fluidi criogenici differenti. La configurazione del criostato è tale che un condotto esterno include un condotto più piccolo e due differenti fluidi criogenici – LN2 e GHe – fluiscono in condizioni termo-fluido dinamiche diverse. Questo articolo mostra i risultati delle simulazioni ottenuti mediante un codice appositamente sviluppato e parametrizzati sulla portata massica dell’elio e sul calore scambiato tra i due fluidi.

In this paper the main results of modeling activities regarding thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena in superconducting cable cryostats with double duct in which different cryogenic fluids flow are shown. The final formulation of a mathematical mono-dimensional steady-state model developed starting from the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics is presented, together with the simulation results obtained with the use of a purposely- designed software.

The cryostat configuration is such that one external duct includes a smaller one and two different cryogenic fluids – LN2 and GHe – flow in different thermo-fluid dynamic conditions. The developed software allows performing sensitivity analyses on the cryogenic fluids behavior inside the cryostat as a function of several thermo-fluid dynamic and design parameters. This paper shows the simulation results parameterized on He mass flow rate and heat exchanged between the two fluids.
