Numerical simulations of the industrial process of natural gas storage in order to investigate the safety of a real depleted reservoir

Esempio di simulazioni numeriche del processo industriale di produzione / iniezione di gas in un bacino profondo in Lombardia. Sono state eseguite simulazioni fluidodinamiche e geomeccaniche per valutare le condizioni del giacimento nel tempo e lo stress generato nella roccia del giacimento.

The storage of natural gas in underground structures plays a key role in the Italian energy system. The studies on the conservation of natural gas are particularly interesting also for analyses related to seismicity. In geological basins where gas storage takes place, factors such as fluid dynamics processes and the response of geological formations are strongly interconnected. This activity concerns numerical simulations of the industrial process of production/injection of gas in a reservoir, considering also an increase in storage capacity with the exercise of overpressure fields. These additional gas capacities would have a positive impact on the energy system, in terms of ensuring the supply of raw materials and increasing flexibility.

For demonstration purposes, the characterization of a natural gas storage site called “Sergnano virtuale” and located in Lombardy, has been done. The fluid-dynamic simulation process results rather accurate and able to correctly replicate the reservoir conditions over time, both in terms of gas volume, distribution of pressures and position of gas water contact (GWC).

Then, a simplified modelling approach was applied to simulate geo-mechanical interactions using a one-way approach and to evaluate the field of displacement vectors in order to verify the stress generated in the reservoir rock. From these results it is possible to notice the deformation of the various formations that spreads up to the ground level.
