RSE already developed the Wind Atlas of Italy, but the offshore maps still suffer for a high uncertainty. Starting from 2006, RSE has being carrying out wind measurement campaigns in order to improve the quality of information concerning offshore wind resource in some marine/coastal area. First these measurement campaigns regarding coastal and island sites of the Apulia and Campania regions. Subsequently, since November 2012, an offshore site 5 km off the coast of Mazara del Vallo in the Sicily Channel.

To perform this monitoring an elastic beacon buoy, called MOBI (Marine Offshore Buoy for Investigation), was equipped by means of appropriate wind measurements sensors and other, meteo apparatuses. MOBI buoy represents the only one direct offshore wind measurement in this marine area. Together with this buoy two additional stations were set up in the coastal area facing the buoy: the Capo Granitola station, very close to the shoreline, and the Contrada Giletto station, 8 km farer, where RSE already gathered wind data in the past.

Simultaneous measurements coming from these two stations are reported together with preliminary correlation studies.The results of wind resource assessment of a wider transitional sea-land area including all RSE stations, based on RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) code, are also reported together with a comparison of these results with measured values.
