Power line ice sleeve growth characterization and monitoring: optical system installation at “wild”- RSE laboratory

Un sistema ottico sicuro (la sorgente laser è inferiore a 2mW), per il monitoraggio dell’accrescimento di manicotti di ghiaccio su conduttori di linee elettriche, è stato installato nel laboratorio RSE a Vinadio per confrontare le misure su conduttori reali con quelle su campioni posizionati a terra.

The revised optical system has been installed to perform continuous monitoring of the ice sleeve formation and accretion on an operating line that passes close to the RSE laboratory of Vinadio. The laboratory is dedicated to study both the accretion mechanisms for different conductors and the testing of new kind of coatings capable to avoid from the initial stages the sleeve formation. The optical system allows to compare the measurements on conductor samples with those taken on a real conductor.

The optical system, previously developed utilized a visible laser source with a quite high intensity, to allow for a continuous unmanned use of this system in safety conditions, a new detection scheme based on a linear detector and a newly designed detector electronics has been designed and tested. The new scheme allows for the use of a less than 2mW, 633 nm laser scanning beam, so no limitations of use due to laser safety are introduced. The obtained results, with tests on white diffusers made by cardboards shaped in various dimensions to simulate ice sleeves of different diameters, indicate that the instrument can give real time measurements of both the clearance to ground and of the ice sleeve diameter with the desired precision.
