Renewable energy from forestry in the Marche Region (Italy): resource availability, current exploitation in domestic and biomass-to-energy (BTE) plants, limits and perspectives towards a sustainable energy production

A regional study targeted on the availability of residual and dedicated forestry biomasses, and their production and consumption for energetic use (heat and electricity), was carried out. The aim of this study was to get a picture of the current situation of local forestry biomass sector and its potential exploitation so that to contribute to the satisfaction of thermal energy and electricity demands in a perspective of a short chain utilization. This was achieved taking into account the problems and critical issues related to the current and future use of this kind of biomass in an optical of energetic biomass sustainability criteria (The global bioenergy partnership sustainability indicators for bioenergy, GBEP – December 2011; STE0209c090 processed by CTI Gdl 1003). This evaluation analyzes the situation in the Marche region and is based on the relevance of its forestry production sector and the contribution they can give to the national and local bioenergy sector. The local potential of resources from forestry activities was evaluated mainly, but not only, referring to national (ie: National Atlas of Biomass, by Enea; Report RSE/2009/167 “Censimento potenziale energetico biomasse, metodo indagine, atlante Biomasse su WEB-GIS) or regional (ie: Regional Forest Inventory, Region Forest Plan, Environmental Energy Plans of the regional mountain community) assessment tools now available. The main focus was on the available potential, that means the gross amount of biomasses achievable from the forestry sectors net of its other current uses (i.e: forestry residues) or real accessibility (i.e.: wood from forestry) and on the basis of sustainability criteria. In this study another investigation was carried out, that is the current and expected forestry residual (i.e: branches) and dedicated (short and medium rotation forestry) biomass use for local energy (heating and electricity) production in biomass plant. The regional profiles of forestry biomass availability and status of this kind of biomass-to-energy sector (heat and electricity) resulting from the study will be presented and discussed in the Poster. This work is part of a larger research proiect, “Studies of the local production of electricity from biomass and residues”, financed by the Research Fund for the Italian Electrical System under the Contract Agreement between RSE and the Ministry of Economic Development – General Directorate for Nuclear Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency stipulated on July 29, 2009 in compliance with the Decree of March 19, 2009.
